In 1999, Hickory Dickory Decks awarded their first franchise to Garth Hutchinson in Whitby, Ontario. Garth came from the renovation market and wanted to concentrate on one trade (decks) instead of 40 home renovations. Whitby is on the eastern side of Toronto, which is Canada's largest city. Our head office is in Hamilton, which is on the western side of Toronto. In 2000, two more franchises were awarded - one to a past employee, and the other to one of our builders. In 2001, three more franchises joined our team. Today, we are the largest deck company in Canada and number two in the world, working in over 50 cities.

Marketing and Sales
Hickory Dickory Decks has been in business since 1987, and has grown every year to become the largest custom deck company in Canada and number two in the world. Our success has been a combination of many traits, the most basic being, "building quality custom decks at a fair price and delivering great customer service." Marketing is one of the major contributing factors to our success. It has taken us over 20 years of hard work and trial and error to become experts of marketing custom decks. We have developed proven methods that are working to get quality leads for our franchises.

Training and Support

Our initial training program is for four weeks for the owner and three weeks for their lead carpenter, held at our head office in Hamilton, Ontario. One of the four weeks is sales and marketing and is done in a classroom environment. Our trainers are experts in design, sales, building, and business operations, with all segments being interwoven into a complete training system.
There are three weeks of deck building during the day with our experienced and licensed crafts person. One of these weeks is usually spent inside our 6,000 square ft wood shop/training facility. During training, the new franchisee will spend time in real life situations with our professional team. Over the training period many long term relationships will be built that can be of assistance in the future. Our training manuals cover sales, building and operations, and are constantly being updated and improved. Our philosophy is that training never stops.

Once the initial four week period is complete, the new franchisee will be in daily conservations with a franchise manager. These managers have experience in all of the fields of running a successful deck business and are available daily for questions and support.
